Turks and Caicos

Tobacco Control Policies

Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory and, as such, falls under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom. The UK became a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on March 16, 2005; however, the WHO FCTC has not been extended to Turks and Caicos.

Smoke Free Places: The law prohibits smoking in most indoor public places and workplaces, with exceptions for smoking areas in tobacco specialty shops and airports. In addition, smoking is prohibited on all means of public transport.

Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship: The law generally prohibits the advertising and promotion of tobacco products. Although sponsorship by the tobacco industry is not completely prohibited, publicity of the sponsorship is prohibited.

Tobacco Packaging and Labeling: The law requires pictorial health warnings covering 50 percent of the front and back of tobacco product packaging. Misleading packaging and labeling, including terms such as “light” and “low tar” and other signs, is prohibited.

Tobacco Taxation and Prices: The World Health Organization recommends raising tobacco excise taxes so that they account for at least 70 percent of retail prices. Tobacco tax information is currently unavailable.
