Tobacco Control Policies

Togo became a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on February 13, 2006.

Smoke Free Places: Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public places, indoor workplaces, and means of public transport except in hotels, restaurants, bars, public bus stations, ferry terminals, ship terminals, railroad stations, and air terminals, where designated smoking areas are permitted.

Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship: Virtually all forms of tobacco advertising and promotion are banned. All forms of financial or other tobacco sponsorship are also prohibited.

Tobacco Packaging and Labeling: Tobacco product packages must display rotating, text-only health warnings on 65 percent of each principal display area. Misleading terms such as “light” and “low” are prohibited on tobacco packaging, but other misleading packaging (e.g., colors, numbers, and symbols) is not prohibited.

Tobacco Taxation and Prices: The World Health Organization recommends raising tobacco excise taxes so that they account for at least 70 percent of retail prices. Tobacco excise taxes in Togo are well below these recommendations.
