Cote d'Ivoire

Tobacco Control Policies

Côte d'Ivoire became a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on November 11, 2010.

Smoke Free Places: Smoking is banned in all indoor and outdoor public places, all indoor workplaces, and on public transport.

Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship: The law contains a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising and promotion. All forms of tobacco sponsorship are prohibited.

Tobacco Packaging and Labeling: Plain packaging is required for all tobacco products. All tobacco product packaging is required to display combined text and picture warnings that occupy 70 percent of the front and back of the package. There are two picture/text warnings, each of which must be displayed for 12 months (consecutively). After two years, the set of warnings must be updated. Misleading packaging and labeling, including terms such as “low-tar,” “mild,” “light,” “ultra-light,” “gold,” and “duo,” and other signs, is prohibited.

Tobacco Taxation and Prices: The World Health Organization recommends raising tobacco excise taxes so that they account for at least 70 percent of retail prices. Tobacco excise taxes in Côte d'Ivoire are well below these recommendations.
