Description of current required warnings/messages:

For smoked tobacco products, the following two general warnings are authorized:

1. Smoking kills.

2. Smoking seriously harms you and those close to you.


The following 14 additional warnings are authorized:

  1. Those who smoke die before their time (Image: foot with morgue tag);
  2. Smoking clogs arteries and causes heart attacks and stroke (Image: open heart surgery);
  3. Smoking causes deadly/terminal lung cancer (image: man in hospital on respirator);
  4. Smoking while pregnant harms your child/baby (image: fetus);
  5. Protect your children – do not let them inhale smoke (image: child smelling tobacco smoke);
  6. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you quit smoking (image: text with phone number);
  7. Smoking is highly addictive, do not start smoking (Image: man smoking a cigarette hooked up to IV).
  8. If you quit smoking your risk of terminal heart and lung disease decreases (image: drawing of person throwing again cigarettes);
  9. Smoking can cause a slow and painful death (Image: lung x-ray);

  11. Smoking can inhibit circulation and can cause impotence (image: limp cigarette);
  12. Smoking speeds up aging of the skin (image: wrinkled hands);

  14. Tobacco smoke contains benzene, nitrosamine, formaldehyde and cyanide (image: rotted teeth and cancerous mouth).


For smokeless tobacco products, the following warnings is authorized: “þessi tobaksvara getur skaðað heilsuna og er avanabindandi” (tobacco can harm your health and is addictive).
